物語の始まり（第１巻）

ハリーポッターシリーズの第１巻「ハリーポッターと賢者の石」はこういう文章で始まります。

“Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense.”

自分達が極めて normalで、strange / mysterious / nonsense なこととは一切関わりがないと思っているダースリー家が、これから魔法使いのHarry（ハリー）に深く関わっていく・・・そういうことを考えながら読んでみると、味わい深い文章だと思います。

なお、この文章の “thank you very much”って何？と思われる方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、これは

“We are perfectly normal, thank you very much.”「おかげさまで私達は極めて普通です。」

という発言を間接話法にしている（sayの目的語のthat節に入れた）のです。
